Chronic Pain & Migraines Q&A

What causes chronic pain?

Chronic pain refers to discomfort that lasts at least three months or persists long after the underlying injury or disease heals. Many long-lasting health conditions cause chronic pain, including:

  • Arthritis
  • Migraines
  • Fibromyalgia
  • Sciatica
  • Herniated discs
  • Spinal stenosis
  • Degenerative disc disease
  • Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
  • Peripheral neuropathy

Chronic pain can range from a dull ache to a sharp, electric-shock pain. It may be constant or come and go.

What causes migraines?

Migraines are neurological disorders that begin when nerves in your head release a burst of electrical activity. Without treatment, migraines last at least four hours and can go as long as three days. During that time you experience:

  • Severe, throbbing pain around one or both temples
  • Sensitivity to light, sound, and smells
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Vertigo (feeling like the room is spinning)
  • Lightheadedness or dizziness

Some people experience aura shortly before a migraine begins. Aura often affects your vision or causes unusual sensations and muscle movements.

What is the connection between chronic pain and mental health?

Living with chronic pain dramatically impacts your psychological well being. You may struggle with insomnia or feel anxious about the ongoing pain and your inability to work. People with chronic pain and migraines face a significantly higher risk of developing depression and anxiety disorders compared to those who don't struggle with pain.

How do counselors treat chronic pain and migraines?

Traci has years of experience helping people cope with the feelings, thoughts, and behaviors caused by chronic pain. Before recommending a treatment, she learns about your medical history and symptoms and does a psychological assessment.

While she is fully trained in many therapeutic techniques, cognitive behavioral therapy is one of the most effective for alleviating pain. Traci may also teach relaxation techniques, mindfulness meditation, and offer therapy for anxiety or depression.

Chronic pain changes the way nerves work in your brain. Additionally, some of your pain may be associated with traumatic memories repressed in your subconscious.

You can get relief from chronic pain and migraines with innovative techniques that rewire your brain, restore normal nerve activity, and release buried emotions. Traci can help you retrain your brain with innovative therapies such as neurofeedback, Brainspotting®, and EMDR.
