As long as you keep using your brain, it continues to learn, adapt, build nerve pathways, and even create new nerve cells. At Tranquil Spaces Counseling, Traci Ober, LIMHP, LPC, offers neurofeedback, a safe, painless therapy that takes advantage of the brain's ability to improve in response to the way you use it. Through this state-of-the-art brain training, people of all ages can learn to relax, improve symptoms caused by mental health disorders, and relieve pain. To learn how you can benefit from neurofeedback, call the office in Norfolk or Plainview, Nebraska, or book an in-person or telemedicine appointment online today.
Neurofeedback is a therapy that trains your brain using computer programs that respond to your brainwaves. During your training, Traci places electrodes on your head. The electrodes pick up your brainwaves, which come from the electrical activity of neurons (nerve cells), and then they send the information to a computer.
The computer shows your brain activity on the monitor. Then Traci teaches you to use your brainwaves to change the image on the screen.
As you regularly engage in neurofeedback — purposefully changing your brainwave patterns to finish the tasks on the computer — your brain responds and its nerve activity changes. This restores normal levels of brain chemicals, which in turn improves your symptoms.
Electroencephalogram (EEG) studies show that the brain's electrical activity is different in people with mental health disorders. Your brainwaves also change when you’re in pain.
As neurofeedback restores normal nerve activity, it can help people overcome conditions such as:
Neurofeedback enhances the overall functioning of your central nervous system and improves mental performance.
Traci also offers the Othmer Method of neurofeedback. This treatment uses an EEG to isolate very low frequency brainwaves. Then Traci uses neurofeedback to specifically train those frequencies.
Targeting the low-frequency brainwaves improves emotional regulation and calms down your nervous system. As a result, this method can help you recover from trauma, let go of fear, and eliminate triggers that cause anxiety, PTSD, and depression.
Traci uses a variety of software programs that record your EEG, show your brain activity, and provide age-specific tasks for training your brain.
As you watch the computer monitor, you can see how your brainwaves move the items on the screen. Then you practice purposefully moving the items by controlling your brainwaves.
For example, you may need to stack blocks, race cars, or play mini-games. Some programs have you rearrange a sequence of items or make items move faster, slower, or in a specific direction.
You get prompt feedback because you immediately see the changes you make on the monitor. Then you can adjust your brainwaves to manipulate the items and accomplish the task.
