Trauma Q&A

What causes trauma?

Trauma occurs after you experience a dangerous, scary, or life-threatening event, whether you were directly involved in the event or witnessed it.

The most common traumatic events include:

  • Being bullied
  • Combat duty
  • Domestic violence
  • Persistent emotional stress at home
  • Physical, sexual, or psychological abuse
  • Community violence (shootings)
  • Car crashes and other accidents
  • Robbery or household invasion
  • Death or serious illness of a loved one or friend
  • Natural disasters (hurricanes, floods, earthquakes)

Children also experience trauma from psychological or physical neglect.

How does trauma affect my health?

Trauma has a dramatic impact on your emotional and physical health. You may experience fear, anger, memory problems, difficulty sleeping, or headaches, to name a few. For many, trauma causes mental health disorders such as depression, anxiety, and post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD).

Trauma also has a long-term impact even after you think you recovered. Your brain stores many details associated with the traumatic event, such as sounds, feelings, smells, buildings, and people.

You're not aware of the details because your brain locks the information deep in your subconscious. During your daily life, you may encounter one of the details and that triggers the subconscious memory. As a result, you experience an unexpected and uncontrollable emotional and/or behavioral reaction.

How is trauma treated?

Traci specializes in alleviating the effects of trauma. She helps you recognize and process your emotions and memories and move beyond the psychological impact of trauma.

In addition to trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, Traci has extensive experience with three therapies proven to help people overcome trauma:

Neurofeedback

Neurofeedback teaches you to retrain your brain, restoring normal electrical activity (that changed due to trauma) and allowing you to overcome the emotional fallout.

Brainspotting

Brainspotting is a technique that identifies a specific eye position connected to your subconscious emotions. Holding that position helps you tap into the details locked away in the emotional part of your brain. As you become aware, Traci guides the process, helping you work through your emotions and heal from the trauma.

Eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR)

During EMDR, you focus on a memory from your trauma while also moving your eyes. Eye movement connects with the emotional areas of your brain, allowing you to recall subconscious memories and talk them through.

You can recover from trauma at any age, no matter when you experienced the event. To schedule an in-person or telemedicine appointment, call the nearest office or use the online booking feature today.
